Concept :

Opened in 2012, Cheval de Hyotan is definitely not the typical French restaurant found in Tokyo. Located in the residential area of Ikebukuro, Cheval de Hyotan offers the perfect mix of the technicity of classic French cuisine and Japanese savory influences. The restaurant gets its name from a Chinese tale. The owners and staff, all English speakers, are happy to share its peculiar story with diners in a delightful, cozy and foreigner-friendly atmosphere.

Key Points :

Fate brought the owners to French cuisine. Takao and Ai Kawazoe were both looking for a career change and to bring joy into people’s lives. Ai is the chef behind the bright open kitchen at Cheval de Hyotan. She got her skills as a student at Le Cordon Bleu, where she graduated at the top of her class. Takao is the restaurant’s wine expert. He brings his knowledge to the table, offering diners pairing suggestions that perfectly complement food. At Cheval de Hyotan you will find mostly French and Austrian wines that go well with the French delicacies.

Recommended Dishes :

The menus are changed every season, but a few popular dishes like the opera style foie gras and apple stay on the menu to please the local customers. Lunch courses (¥2,800, ¥3,800, ¥6,300) and dinner courses (¥6800, ¥9,800) using seasonal ingredients are recommended. At dinner, a la carte service is also available. At all times, those with a sweet tooth will be able to choose between more than 4 types of desserts. To continue the delicious experience at home, the shop Peche de Hyotan, across the street offers some of their more popular dishes, including pate, deli items, smoked duck and more.
